In this modern day society, the order of Yah has

been turned upside down. Instead of what He has designed, which is to flow under the leadership of the man, it has been culturally relegated/downgraded to the control of women. That’s why, throughout Scripture, He has never intended that women, nor children, be independent of the leadership of a man. However, custody in the U.S. predominantly is favored to women over men, where “…about 80% of…one-parent families are led by a single mother, while 20% are maintained by a single father (See article on single parent double standard against men). In fact, the “Courts (have) determined who would get custody of illegitimate children and did not generally give mothers custody until the 1800s. American child custody law is rooted in Roman law and English common law.” (When Courts Started Giving Custody To Women)
However, for this article, let’s look at the following points to see what Scripture says in regards to the custom and care of children:
•The man has been given to rule his wife ever since the garden, according to Yahweh, in Genesis 3:16,
“To the woman He said,
“I will greatly multiply
Your pain in childbirth,
In pain you will bring forth children;
Yet your desire will be for your husband,
And he will rule over you.”
•Even when it comes to who a child belongs to, the father is the head, so in parenting, the wife is to be subject to him in everything. In other words, if her authority over her very children is somehow independent from her husband, then that would mean in parenting this would be one area where she isn’t under full subjection to him. For that would contradict Paul saying that she “must be subjected under her own husband in everything...as the church is to be subjected to Christ…” For Ephesians 5:22-24, reads,
“22 ¶ Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.”
•The man owns everything within the house to include his wife the mother of his children, as well as all of his children also, according to Exodus 20:17, which reads,
“17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
•In Israel, the inheritance rights of land as well as the entire household, Yah intended that it goes to and solely through the man’s authority. Only the nearest patriarch relative to the house can redeem what belongs to a deceased man, impart the family blessing or bequeath inheritances. Therefore, inheritance laws and lineage within the Kingdom is always counted through the male line and not the female. This principle also demands there be male headship and authority, because mothers cannot determine and impart legacy onto progeny. Only the man can. Now let’s see:
-Exodus 22:29,
“29 ¶ “You shall not delay the offering from your harvest and your vintage. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to Me.”
-and Deuteronomy 21:15-17,
“15 ¶ “If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other loved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him sons, if the firstborn son belongs to the loved,
16 then it shall be in the day he wills what he has to his sons, he cannot make the son of the loved the firstborn before the son of the loved, who is the firstborn.”
-and Deuteronomy 25:5-6,
“5 ¶ “When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.
6 “It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.”
-and Ruth 4:7-12,
“7 ¶ Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel.
8 So the closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal.
9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon.
10 “Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.”
11 All the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem.
12 “Moreover, may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which the LORD will give you by this young woman.”
•Paul also taught that believers in Yeshua become the children of Abraham upon putting faith in Yeshua. Particularly that the men become the rightful heirs, according to Galatians 2:26-29,
“26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is either male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”
•Men who descend from Abraham are commanded to rule their entire household just as he did in Genesis 18:17-19,
“17 The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,
18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
19 “For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”
•Yeshua taught that men should do the things that Abraham did, if they are true children of his in John 8:39. He did so to demonstrate what true sonship in the Kingdom is based upon (or how one lives out this life). For it reads,
“39 They (The Jews) answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, DO THE DEEDS of Abraham.”
•If the man is the woman’s head just as Messiah is the man’s head, then just as the Messiah owns the man, so too does the man own his woman. Let’s read:
-1 Corinthians 11:3,
“3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.”
-1 Corinthians 6:19-20,
“19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
•Note, a mother should be a wife and a wife is there for her husband’s glory and not her own. In other words, she was not created for him to have her children, but for her to have his children, in 1 Corinthians 11:7-9,
“7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
8 For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man;
9 for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.”
•When children are not under the full control of their father, then this disqualifies him from performing any legitimate service for the Most High. He cannot even rule the Household of Yah if he cannot first rule his own house. Therefore, full control in the hands of the man is a must, according to 1 Timothy 3:4-5,
“4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity
5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)”
•The man is and should be the supreme teacher in the home, over the woman and children. That means not even the woman herself, the pastor of the local assembly or any other man has authority over a man’s wife and children’s spiritual growth in Yahweh. Therefore, she has no authority to bypass her husband’s authority as her head/teacher inside or out of the home:
-1 Corinthians 14:34-35,
“34 ¶ The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.
35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.”
-1 Timothy 2:11-14,
“11 A woman must quietly receive instruction (from her husband at home) with entire submissiveness.
12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.”
-Proverbs 22:6,
“6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
-Deuteronomy 4:10,
“10 “Remember the day you (men) stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, ‘Assemble the people (consisting only of the men: see Deut. 23:1-2) to Me, that I may let them hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’”
-Deuteronomy 6:1-2,
“1 ¶ “Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you (men), that you (men) might do them in the land where you (men) are going over to possess it, 2 so that you (men) and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you (men), all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.”
•Then there’s the principle commanded in Scripture that gives the man full authority even over his wife’s ability to vow/promise any volunteered services unto Yah. In other words, the man even has full authority to either nullify or uphold any decision she may desire to make for herself in service unto The Most High. For example, she may either want to join a woman’s group that helps feed homeless people, join the choir at her local congregation or simply desire to pledge money for orphans over a 6 week period, etc.. However, her husband ultimately has Yah given power over her decisions in such regards. Now with such authority, it is hard to see how a woman could somehow legitimately have authority, independent, or even superior to a man over his children, when he has Yah given headship over her vowed commitments even unto Yah Himself. An authority that is even over a woman’s basic volunteered commitments she may want to make for her Creator. In other words, the western family court systems has it totally wrong today by circumventing this Divinely inspired protocol for the home. Therefore, according to Scripture, if a woman can’t even volunteer independent of her husband, not even to bake a cake for the pastor’s banquet without his consent, it seems hard-pressed to say that she somehow has some God given right that is equal to her husband over the children she bears for him. For Numbers 5:30:13-16, reads,
“13 Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself.
14 But if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or the pledgesbinding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing to her when he hears about them.
15 If, however, he nullifies them some time after he hears about them, then he must bear the consequences of her wrongdoing.”
16 These are the regulations the LORD gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living at home.”
Now finally, with the man having such Yah-given authority that extends to even a woman’s spiritual learning and spiritual service, it should be clear that a man’s children belongs to him. However, in spite of all this Biblical evidence, we just read, we do live in a modern society that ever seeks to resist this Biblical order. Nevertheless, the facts don’t lie. Not only do women, themselves, need the leadership of men in their lives, they need even more leadership in place when they have children within their care.
That’s why to sum up this piece, I think the fitting thing is to let the statistics show how what the culture is advocating in making women equal to or either superior to men, the data proves that fathers are far better suited for child custody than mothers. For all of the major statistics show that children do far better with a single father than they do with a single mother, if both parents are not simultaneously in the home. They tend to, therefore, fare a better chance in life, overall, living with their dads.
